Renzi Said to Demand Reference to Press Freedom in Turkey Deal

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi insisted on the inclusion of a reference to press freedom in the text of any deal with Turkey, according to officials from two European Union governments.

Renzi told fellow leaders that he wouldn’t sign any accord that didn’t have a reference to media freedom, the officials said Monday, asking not to be named as the discussions are ongoing and private.

EU leaders arriving for an EU-Turkey summit in Brussels expressed concern about the Turkish authorities seizing control of Zaman, a leading newspaper critical of the government. The EU is seeking an accord with Turkey to halt the flow of refugees across its territory to Europe.
