Warren Buffett picked the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s energy business for an oversight position at Kraft Heinz Co., expanding the role of a key deputy as the billionaire’s company prepares a new generation of leaders.

Greg Abel, 53, serves on the operations-and-strategy board committee at the foodmaker, according to Kraft Heinz’s proxy statement Thursday. The other members are 3G Capital’s Alex Behring and John Cahill, the former chief executive officer of Kraft Foods Group Inc. Berkshire and 3G engineered the merger between Kraft and Heinz, which was completed last year.
