Sumner Redstone should be succeeded as chairman of Viacom Inc. by someone who isn’t a trustee or involved in his affairs, his daughter Shari Redstone said, implying that Chief Executive Officer Philippe Dauman shouldn’t be promoted.
Dauman is one of Sumner Redstone’s trustees and is designated to take charge of the 92-year-old billionaire’s health care if he can no longer make decisions on his own. Shari Redstone is vice chairman of Viacom and of CBS Corp., the broadcaster her father also controls. Sumner Redstone resigned as chairman of CBS effective Tuesday, and his daughter nominated CEO Les Moonves to replace him.
"My firm belief that whoever may succeed my father as chair at each company should be someone who is not a trustee of my father’s trust or otherwise intertwined in Redstone family matters, but rather a leader with an independent voice," Shari Redstone said in a statement Wednesday.
Viacom’s board is scheduled to meet Thursday, though the company hasn’t said what it will discuss.
