Soon You Can Hail an Uber Airbus Helicopter at Sundance

  • Airbus to cooperate with ride service to provide flights
  • Pilot project to be tested at Sundance Film Festival in Utah

European aerospace giant Airbus Group SE will cooperate with U.S. ride-hailing service Uber Technologies Inc. to provide on-demand flights with its H125 and H130 helicopters.

The service will be tested at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah,
which starts Jan. 21, Airbus Chief Executive Officer Tom Enders told a technology conference in Munich on Sunday. The project aims to make helicopter flights available to a wider audience, he said. Enders didn’t say how much a ride will cost.

Airbus gained as much as 2.4 percent in Paris. The stock rose 0.2 percent to 56.27 euros at 11 a.m.

The cooperation with Uber comes as Airbus’s Enders seeks to push innovation at the Toulouse, France-based company that makes everything from civil airplanes to military transporters. While Uber has tested its service with other forms of transportation than cars -- including rickshaws in India and boats in Istanbul -- Airbus has struggled with helicopter sales, impacting sales and profit.

In a bid to further push innovation, Airbus has armed its Silicon Valley branch with $150 million in venture capital to invest in promising aerospace startups around the world.
