Hollande Should Face Primary on French Left, Piketty, Others Say

France’s left-leaning political parties should organize a primary to select their 2017 presidential candidate, according to an editorial in Liberation newspaper signed by economist Thomas Piketty, former European lawmaker Daniel Cohn-Bendit and nine others.

“We’re calling for a grand primary of the left and the ecologists,” the editorial carried on the front page of the newspaper said. “Our primary is the condition sine qua non for a candidate to represent these forces in the presidential election and embody the positive project that France needs to extricated itself from a dead-end.”

If held, a primary would be the first time a sitting French president faced a challenge to his leadership before seeking re-election.
