- Israeli Arab gunman found in hometown after week-long manhunt
- Gunman shot as he left hiding place and opened fire on forces
Israeli security forces shot dead an Arab gunman who killed three people in Tel Aviv on New Year’s Day.
After a week-long search, the man was found holed up in a building in his hometown of Ar’ara and was killed as he left his hiding place and opened fire, police said. “We will continue to fight terrorism with everything we have,” Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan said in a statement.
The Israeli Arab, earlier identified by police as Nashat Milhem, was caught on video camera at a grocery before he took a gun out of his bag and began shooting into a cafe on a major Tel Aviv shopping street.
He killed two Israelis celebrating a friend’s birthday before fleeing. Later, he shot dead a taxi driver.
Near-daily stabbing and car attacks by Palestinians against civilians and soldiers have left Israel on edge. More than 20 Israelis and about 140 Palestinians have died in the violence since October.
