Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. is deciding who will speak at the health-care industry’s biggest investor conference next week with Chief Executive Officer Mike Pearson sidelined on medical leave.

Pearson, who was hospitalized late last month with a severe case of pneumonia, isn’t expected to participate in the JPMorgan Chase & Co. conference in San Francisco, an outside spokeswoman for the drugmaker said Tuesday. She declined to provide an update on Pearson’s condition.

Valeant announced Monday that it will make a presentation to investors on Jan. 13 at the conference. The company is being run by a team of executives while Pearson is out, complicating its recovery from controversy last year over its drug prices and its relationships with mail-order pharmacies.
