Fire at Oil Field in Azerbaijan Kills 30 People, Official Says

At least 30 oil workers died in Azerbaijan after an offshore platform run by state energy company Socar caught fire, a company official said.

The fire at the Guneshli field in the Caspian Sea was caused on Friday by a gas leak following a storm, said the official, who asked not to be named before the company makes an announcement about the incident.

There were 63 people on the platform before the fire broke out, the official said, adding that 33 have been rescued. It’s the deadliest incident Socar, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, has ever recorded, he said.

Firefighters are still trying to bring the blaze under control, he said.
