French Naval Force Able to Act in Syria Monday, Le Drian Says

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said planes from the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier will be ready to start carrying out strikes in Syria starting Monday.

Speaking on Europe 1 radio, Le Drian also said that the defense ministry’s current spending plans fit within France’s 2016 budget though more money than previously expected will be required in 2017 and 2018 to provide military equipment.

Le Drian, who previuosly indicated he would resign as defense minister if he became head of a regional government in Brittany, said tht exceptional circumstances mean he will stay on as minister “as long as president deems it necessary.”
