Fabius Sees Some Flexibility on Timing of Assad’s Departure

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad can’t be part of the country’s future but he said there is some flexibility about when he leaves.

“We continue to say there must be a political transition in Syria and that Bashar al-Assad can’t be part of the future,” Fabius said Thursday on France Inter. “Where there is some room for maneuver is on the process.” He said the first step needed to be a cease-fire, then a political transition, and then a new government.

Fabius also said the downing of the Russian airliner and the attacks in Paris “appear” to have led to a change in Russia’s position in Syria where they concentrate their air raids on Islamic State.
