- Spectators had flocked to see tank shootouts, combat displays
- Blast occurred near main event and also wounded one person
A child was killed in an explosion in eastern Ukraine as pro-Russian separatists staged a tank show to entertain locals.
One person was also wounded in the blast, which occurred on the sidelines of the $30,000 event, rebel official Eduard Basurin said Thursday by phone. About 2,500 spectators had gathered in the Donetsk region village of Ternove as tanks more accustomed to battling Ukraine’s army went head to head in shooting contests and raced along a 6-kilometer (4 miles) obstacle course.
The show was a sign of easing tensions in Ukraine’s 17-month conflict, where the latest truce is holding as the warring factions step up efforts to implement a peace accord. President Petro Poroshenko said Thursday that he’d visit the U.S. and France to discuss fulfilling the February pact with world leaders. While Russia has suggested the deal may need to be extended, it has reaffirmed its backing for its terms.
The war has killed more than 8,000 people, according to the United Nations, and pushed the former Soviet nation to the edge of default.
