France to Strike Islamic State in Syria in Weeks, Le Drian Says

The French air force will carry out its first strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria in the “coming weeks,” Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in an interview on France Inter radio.

France began reconnaissance flights over Syria on Sept. 8 and will start attacks “once we have well identified targets,” Le Drian said.

French warplanes have been attacking Islamic State targets in Iraq for over a year and on Sept. 7 President Francois Hollande announced that the air campaign would be extended to Syria.
