Mizuho Financial Group Inc., Japan’s third-biggest lender by market value, hired former JPMorgan Chase & Co. banker Richard Thompson as co-head of its U.S. private-placements group.
Thompson, 45, will be based in New York and work with Takashi Miyake to originate and structure debt deals, Tokyo-based Mizuho said Thursday in an e-mailed statement. Thompson was formerly global head of debt private placements at JPMorgan, according to the statement.
Mizuho is ramping up its U.S. bond business, underwriting twice as much investment-grade debt as last year and acting as lead manager on the three biggest offerings. The firm bought $42 billion of North American loan commitments from Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc this year, and hired more than 100 RBS bankers.
Thompson worked at JPMorgan from 1997 to October 2014, according to Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records. Before that, he went through the training program at Chase Manhattan Bank and worked as a credit officer there, according to his profile on Linkedin.
