Alaska’s Limits on Medicaid Financing for Abortions Voided

Alaska’s limits on Medicaid coverage for low-income women were ruled unconstitutional by a state judge.

The judge found that measures that were supposed to take effect last year violates equal protection rights, according to a copy of the ruling provided by a lawyer for Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest. The ruling couldn’t immediately be verified in court records.

Superior Court Judge John Suddock on Thursday ordered the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services to fund all medically necessary abortions for Medicaid recipients.

The case is Planned Parenthood v. Streur, 3AN-14-04711, Alaska Superior Court (Anchorage).
