MHI Vestas Offshore Wind A/S won a conditional order for as much as 450 megawatts of wind turbines for Dong Energy A/S’s Borkum Riffgrund II project off Germany.
Parent company Vestas Wind Systems A/S will announce more details when the deal for V164 8-megawatt turbines becomes unconditional, the Aarhus, Denmark-based manufacturer said Monday in a statement.
Set up last year with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., MHI Vestas is trying to break the stranglehold on the offshore wind market held by Germany’s Siemens AG, which installed 86 percent of all turbines in 2014, according to the European Wind Energy Association. Vestas’s share was 9.5 percent.
In a separate statement on Monday, Vestas said it won a 50-megawatt order in Uruguay from Glymont SA, a venture owned by Akuo Energy and Eurus Energy America. The deal for 15 V117 3.3-megawatt turbines at the Florida II project includes a 10-year service agreement, with commissioning due in the third quarter of next year.
