A South Sudanese reporter was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the capital, Juba, the sixth journalist killed this year, the country’s press union said.
Peter Julius Moi was gunned down late Wednesday as he traveled home from work, Oliver Modi, chairman of the Union of Journalists in South Sudan, said by phone Thursday from Juba. Moi’s death was reported to police, Modi said.
Police spokesman Col. James Monday Enoka would neither confirm nor deny receiving information about the incident when contacted by phone. South Sudan is ranked in 125th place of 180 countries listed in Reporters Without Borders’ world press freedom index.
