Crowdfunding Campaign to Save Northern White Rhino Through IVF

A Kenyan nature conservancy and a Czech zoo are campaigning to raise $800,000 through crowdfunding to develop in-vitro fertilization techniques for the endangered northern white rhino.

There are only four of the square-lipped subspecies -- three females and one male -- in the world and they are all incapable of natural reproduction, Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Dvur Kralove Zoo Conservancy said in an e-mailed statement on Tuesday.

“If the remaining females die before this method has been developed, one of the last chances to save the northern white rhinos will vanish,” according to the organizations.

Proceeds from the GoFundMe campaign, named #makearhino, will help create a safe procedure for extracting egg cells from the remaining females, fertilizing them with semen collected from northern whites and transferring embryos to a southern surrogate mother, they said.
