U.K. stocks rose for a second day, helped by gains in British American Tobacco Plc and Barclays Plc.
British American Tobacco advanced 3.6 percent after first-half profit beat estimates. Barclays rose 1.8 percent after Chairman John McFarlane pledged to step up the pace of his overhaul of the British lender as it reported a 8.8 percent increase in profit. Hikma Pharmaceuticals Plc jumped 3.7 percent after Jefferies Group raised its rating on the stock to buy.
Compass Group Plc fell 5.3 percent after Numis Corp. cut its full-year earnings outlook for the company. Smiths Group Plc
The FTSE 100 Index rose 1.2 percent to 6,631 at the close in London. The broader FTSE All-Share Index added 1.1 percent, and Ireland’s ISEQ Index rose 0.8 percent.
