Evercore Adds Ex-Merrill Banker Baxter for Health-Care Deals

Evercore Partners Inc., the merger advisory firm founded by Roger Altman, hired Edmund D. Baxter as a senior managing director in its health-care banking group.

Baxter, who is based in Menlo Park, California, was most recently in charge of life sciences coverage for Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch operation on the West Coast, the New York-based advisory firm said Monday in a statement.

Evercore has added at least 10 senior managing directors in its advisory business this year in what Chief Executive Officer Ralph Schlosstein has called an especially strong period for recruiting. The firm has worked on health-care deals including CVS Health Corp.’s agreement to acquire Omnicare Inc. for about $11 billion.

“Health care represents one of the largest and most active industries for investment-banking services,” Schlosstein said in the statement. “Ed is a critically important addition to our extremely talented health-care advisory and capital markets team.”

Baxter has advised on deals including BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.’s acquisition of Prosensa Holding NV, Forest Laboratories Inc.’s takeover of Furiex Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Ardea Biosciences Inc.’s sale to AstraZeneca Plc, according to the statement. He began his career as a bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the firm said.

Baxter received his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, according to the statement.

A spokesman for Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bank of America didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
