Japan Aims to Use Biofuels for Flights by 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Japan will draw up a plan to introduce biofuels to power commercial flights by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as part of efforts to shift to cleaner fuel.

A task force set up by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will start discussions on the subject on July 7, the trade ministry said on its website Thursday.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents some 260 airlines around the world, is targeting an average improvement in fuel efficiency of 1.5 percent per year by 2020 and a cut in net aviation carbon dioxide emissions of 50 percent by 2050 from 2005 levels.
