Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo called the U.K.’s detention of the East African nation’s intelligence chief an outrage and said his Spanish arrest warrant for alleged war crimes was “preposterous.”
General Karenzi Karake was arrested at Heathrow Airport in London on June 20 and has appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court after being detained under a European Arrest Warrant, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported, citing Scotland Yard. Karake, director of Rwanda’s National Intelligence and Security Services, was indicted by a Spanish judge in 2008, it said.
“Western solidarity in demeaning Africans is unacceptable,” Mushikiwabo said Tuesday on her Twitter account. “It is an outrage to arrest Rwandan official based on pro-genocidaires lunacy!”
