Aetna Makes Takeover Offer for Health Insurer Humana, WSJ Says

Aetna Inc. made a takeover proposal to fellow health insurer Humana Inc. in the last few days, the Wall Street Journal reported, without saying where it got the information.

Earlier Saturday, another health insurer, Anthem Inc., made a non-binding public offer for Cigna Corp. Anthem also considered buying Humana, a person familiar with the matter said this month, as the health insurance industry embarks on a wave of consolidation.

Analysts have said that Aetna would probably respond to a merger between Anthem and Cigna by bidding for Humana. Humana had a market value of about $30 billion Friday, compared with Aetna’s $43 billion.
