This Palo Alto Hotel Teamed With Jawbone to Pressure Guests to Be Healthier

You're going to live that Valley life, whether you want to or not

I think I've found the most Palo Alto thing ever.

Starting this week, the Epiphany Hotel in downtown Palo Alto is joining with Jawbone to offer a hospitality package that features special incentives and planned activities centered around the fitness tracker. There's also complementary access to the hotel gym (duh), and an optional sleep aid kit in your junior suite room to help with exercise recovery. The healthier you are during your stay, the more free stuff you get, not to mention all that well-earned self-satisfaction.

If you already have a Jawbone band, you just set it up with the program on check-in. If you're yet to climb aboard the techno-fitness train, you can buy an UP2 band for $99 at the front desk. From there, the Epiphany gives you a map of Palo Alto, complete with the average number of steps it takes to get to important locations, and a tip sheet for getting the most out of your UP2.

Hotel restaurant Lure + Till has a dedicated healthy options menu filled with such things as heirloom carrot salad and farro verde that will steer you well clear of the fois gras terrine and bacon-wrapped saddle of rabbit. There's also a trendy Smeg "fresh fridge" in each suite, stocked with such things as strawberries, eggs, and green juice, instead of the usual cocktail peanuts and $12 bottle of Heineken.

But what about those rewards? When your Jawbone clocks you in at 10,000 steps, The Epiphany throws in a free appetizer at Lure + Till (only from that healthy menu, naturally). At 15,000, you earn breakfast the next morning, while if you manage to hit 20,000 steps, you get a $30 Lure + Till gift card to spend as you wish.

"The Epiphany was always intended and created to be a direct reflection of its location," said hotel general manager Lorenz Maurer via e-mail. "We believe that the Jawbone UP2 Fitness Band perfectly suits the Palo Alto lifestyle, tying together healthy living, staying fit, and the latest technology." Resistance is futile.

The Jawbone x Epiphany package starts at $449 per person.

Updates in the third paragraph to reflect new Jawbone price from hotel.
