Russia Shouldn’t Spend Money on Foreign Sports Stars, Putin Says

Russia shouldn’t spend budget money and funds of state companies to acquire star foreign athletes, President Vladimir Putin said.

The priority is spending on popular sports and not on “prestige” signings of foreign stars who are sometimes acquired at “nontransparent and often unfounded prices,” Putin said at a meeting with top officials and billionaires in the Kremlin.

Russia has an excessive number of foreign specialists and athletes, which thwarts sports development and creates difficulties for the national sports teams, Putin said.

It’s “not bad” for foreign athletes to acquire Russian citizenship, the president said.
