Rio Ferdinand, a former England captain and defender for Manchester United, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, has retired from soccer.
Ferdinand, 36, made the announcement on BT Sport, the broadcaster said. Earlier this month, he thanked his clubs and fans for their support after the death of his wife.
His last club QPR, which dropped out of the Premier League after finishing last this season, said this week his contract wouldn’t be renewed.
“All the best to @rioferdy5 following his retirement from football,” QPR said on its Twitter feed today.
