Humana Explores Possible Sale on Cigna Interest

Humana Inc. is exploring a sale, after the health insurer was approached by Cigna Corp. about a potential deal, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

The company’s shares rose 17.6 percent to $209.83 as of 1:44 p.m. in New York, giving it a market value of about $31 billion, after the Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the company is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. on the process.

Aetna Inc. has also expressed interest in Humana, the Wall Street Journal said.

Alex Kepnes, a spokesman for Humana, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, while Matthew Asensio, a Cigna spokesman, and Cynthia Michener, a spokeswoman for Aetna, declined to comment.
