Roy Lichtenstein’s comic book-style painting “The Ring (Engagement)” sold for $41.7 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
Stefan Edlis, a Chicago-based collector who recently gifted 42 artworks worth at least $400 million to the Art Institute of Chicago, is the seller of the 1962 painting. Sotheby’s estimated the work, which shows a ring being placed on a finger, at about $50 million.
The record for Lichtenstein is “Woman With Flowered Hat,” a 1963 painting that sold for $56 million in 2013 at Christie’s.
Sotheby’s contemporary art evening sale is continuing.
