U.K.’s Clegg Holds Seat, Says to Comment on Leadership Today

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg retained his Sheffield Hallam seat for the Liberal Democrats in the U.K. general election, but said he would comment on his position as leader later today after a painful night for his party.

“It’s painfully clear that it’s been a cruel and punishing night for the Liberal Democrats,” Clegg said after the result was announced.

Senior figures in Clegg’s party including Vince Cable and Ed Davey, Cabinet ministers in the last coalition government, lost their seats, as an exit poll showed the Liberal Democrats cutting their number of seats to 10 from 57 at the last election.
