Allete Inc., a U.S. energy provider, bought two wind farms in western Minnesota with a combined 97.5 megawatts of capacity from a unit of EDF Renewable Energy Inc.
Allete paid $47.5 million for the Chanarambie and Viking power plants near Lake Benton, the Duluth, Minnesota-based company said in a statement Thursday. Xcel Energy Inc.’s Northern States Power utility is buying the electricity generated from the wind farms under a longterm contract.
The power plants are about 20 miles from a 104-megawatt wind farm Allete acquired last year from AES Corp.
“This acquisition makes good sense from an efficiency standpoint due to their proximity to the Lake Benton project we acquired a year ago,” Eric Norberg, president of Allete Clean Energy, said in the statement.
