France’s Sarkozy to Change Party Name Ahead of Elections

France’s ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy may change the name of his opposition party to “The Republicans” at the group’s May 30 congress in Paris, Le Monde reports today.

Sarkozy, who heads the party, may re-brand his Union for a Popular Movement to “Les Republicains” in reference to the fact that France by constitution is a republic. The name was chosen in an executive meeting of the party this month, Le Monde reports citing a participant to the meeting.

The ex-president’s spokeswoman Veronique Wache declined to confirm the information when reached by Bloomberg News. The next French ballot are the regional elections due at the end of the year.
