DeNA Surges After Topping Apple Apps Chart in Japan

Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- DeNA Co. rose in Tokyo trading after its Kiritani-san x Bike Run game jumped to the top ranking of free Apple Inc. iOS application downloads in Japan.

The Japanese social-media service added 3.7 percent to close at 1,324 yen, the highest since Aug. 4, in Tokyo trading. The app was ranked No. 1 as of 2 p.m. by an hourly ranking in Tokyo today compared with 454 yesterday, according to researcher App Annie Ltd.

Success with the new game follows DeNA’s struggle to capture a shift to mobile apps on smartphones from an earlier generation of devices that relied on the gamemaker’s platform to download and play titles. Shares of the company, which operates the Mobage network, have fallen 40 percent this year after dropping 22 percent in 2013.

The new hit game features celebrity Japanese board game player and investor Hiroto Kiritani as he rides a bike through obstacles around Tokyo. The game doesn’t feature in-app purchases and is used to drive users to other DeNA games, company spokesman Tomoyuki Akiyama, said by phone.
