Google Buys Product-Design Company Gecko for X Projects

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc. is acquiring Gecko Design Inc. to add product-design capabilities to its research lab.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Gecko, which is based in Los Gatos, California, will join Google’s X lab, the startup said on its website. The company helps design products for clients including Hewlett-Packard Co., furniture maker Herman Miller Inc. and wearable-device provider Fitbit Inc., according to its website.

“This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko,” Jacques Gagne, Gecko’s president and owner, wrote on the site. “We are very excited and honored to join Google(x) and work on a variety of cutting edge projects.”

Google confirmed the deal to bring Gecko to X without giving details.

Google is investing in its research lab as it seeks to develop fresh technology such as its Glass computerized eyewear and driverless cars. The Mountain View, California-based company, which has stepped up dealmaking this year, has acquired other companies for X including last year purchasing wind-turbine developer Makani Power.
