Alstom Teams Up With Brazil’s Gutierrez to Make Turbine Towers

Alstom SA, the French power-equipment supplier, and the Brazilian engineering and construction company Andrade Gutierrez SA formed a joint venture to open a factory that will make steel towers for wind turbines.

Alstom will supply 49 percent of the 30 million euros ($39.7 million) needed for the plant in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia, according to a statement today from the French company. The plant is expected to begin production this year and will be able to make 200 towers a year.

Alstom has a 13 percent share of the wind turbine market in Brazil, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The company has two other plants in the country, another tower factory in Rio Grande do Sul state, and one in Bahia that produces nacelles, the car-sized units that house a turbine’s machinery.

The partnership between the two companies was signed last week, according to an e-mail from Alstom’s press office today.
