Gaza Rocket Hits Israel as Truce Deadline Approaches, Army Says

A rocket from the Gaza Strip hit Israeli territory two hours before a three-day truce was set to expire at midnight.

The rocket firing “breached the cease-fire,” the Israeli army said in a text message. The projectile fell in a field in southern Israel and caused no damage, according to the army. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declined to comment. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from Palestinian militants in Gaza.

Negotiators in Cairo have been unable over three days of talks to mediate a longer-term pact that would end the hostilities, which killed more than 1,900 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, and 67 on the Israeli side, all but three soldiers.

Hamas has demanded an end to the blockade on Gaza that Israel imposed after the militant group won Palestinian elections in 2006. Israel has sought assurances that militants won’t resume their rocket attacks and cross-border raids.

Along with the U.S. and European Union, Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organization.
