Barnes & Noble Inc., the largest U.S. bookstore chain, is teaming with Google Inc.’s shopping service to offer same-day delivery in selected urban areas in a bid to win more customers and compete with Amazon.com Inc.
The deliveries start today in West Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area and Manhattan, where Google’s online Shopping Express already operates, Jaime Carey, the bookseller’s chief merchandising officer, said in a phone interview.
The program may help the New York-based bookseller better compete with Amazon, which has captured customers with its expedited delivery, vast online offerings and Kindle tablets. The e-commerce giant earlier this week said it’s rolling out one-day shipping on some products to six additional cities on top of the four it already serves.
Carey, 53, said Barnes & Noble’s partnership with Google will allow the retailer to reach new customers and he expects the new one-day service to expand as Google’s Shopping Express also grows.
“I anticipate as they move forward into these new markets, we’re going to move with them,” he said.
Google, based in Mountain View, California, debuted Shopping Express in March last year, working with retailers including Target Corp. and Walgreen Co. Google, which confirmed the partnership in an e-mailed statement, declined to elaborate on future Shopping Express locations. Its website says it’s expanding the delivery service soon.
Barnes & Noble Chief Executive Officer Michael Huseby is splitting off the retailer’s bookstore chain and loss-making Nook electronic-reader business into separately traded companies in an effort to improve performance.
Shares of the retailer rose 2.6 percent to $21.75 at the close in New York. The stock has climbed 45 percent this year.
The partnership was earlier reported by the New York Times. Barnes & Noble already offered its own same-day delivery to Manhattan customers.
