Billionaire Musk’s SpaceX Launches Satellite on Falcon 9

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. launched a commercial satellite early today from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Falcon 9, a rocket designed by SpaceX, lifted off carrying AsiaSat 8, a communications satellite, at 4 a.m. eastern daylight time, according to a blog post from the Hawthorne, California-based company. In 2012, Falcon 9 made a delivery to the International Space Station, making SpaceX the first commercial company ever to visit the station, according to SpaceX’s website.

SpaceX, founded in 2002 by Musk who also helped found electric-car maker Tesla Motors Inc., designs, builds and launches rockets and has the goal of enabling life on other planets.

The company plans to build the world’s first commercial launchpad near Brownsville in south Texas, Governor Rick Perry’s office said this week. The state is providing $2.3 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund to bring an estimated 300 jobs to the launch site.
