Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- A ban has been lifted on drinking water in Toledo, Ohio, that was contaminated with an algae toxin, Mayor D. Michael Collins said in a televised news conference.

Tests show toxins have returned to acceptable levels after hundreds of thousands of residents in and around the city were told Aug. 2 not to drink tap water suspected to have been polluted by a Lake Erie algae bloom.

“The water is fine,” Eric Zgodzinski of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department said during the news conference. “It’s safe to drink.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich declared an emergency in the state’s fourth-largest city and surrounding counties. Seven distribution centers opened to provide hydration and the state trucked in water. Restaurants closed unless they used bottled water. The region’s largest hospital system canceled non-emergency surgeries.
