Telkom Union Expresses ‘Disgust’ at CEO Car Cloning Allegations

July 30 (Bloomberg) -- Telkom SA SOC Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Sipho Maseko must “face the music” if found guilty of cloning car number plates and avoiding traffic fines, according to South Africa’s Communication Workers Union.

The CWU “wish to register its shock and disgust at the allegation of car license cloning” by Maseko, the labor group said in an e-mailed statement. “We fully support the investigation into this matter by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.”

Johannesburg’s Star newspaper reported on July 25 that Maseko, who has been CEO of Africa’s biggest land-line carrier since April last year, is accused of running up about 30,000 rand ($2,807) in traffic fines that were sent to the owner of his old Range Rover, which carried the same license plates as his new vehicle. A police investigation is under way, while Telkom Chief Risk Officer Ouma Rasethaba said the board is looking into the matter.

Telkom spokesman Pynee Chetty didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment. On July 25, Maseko referred questions on the allegations to his personal spokesman, who declined to comment when reached by phone.
