Boehner Says Impeachment Talk Is a Democratic ‘Scam’

Talk of Republicans impeaching President Barack Obama is a “scam” ginned up by Democrats to raise campaign money, Speaker John Boehner told reporters today.

“We have no plans to impeach the president,” Boehner told reporters in Washington, adding quickly that “we have no future plans” either.

They want to sue him instead.

Republican leaders plan a vote July 31 on a resolution that would allow the House to sue the Obama administration, focusing on the president’s decision to delay implementing the employer insurance mandate in the health-care law.

There’s been internal pressure from some in the conference to impeach Obama. Texas Republican Steve Stockman sent his colleagues a book in October about impeachment, saying at the time he hoped it would persuade them to hold Obama “legally responsible for his disregard for the law.”

That dissent has been fanned by other Republicans including Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, who said July 8 the House should impeach Obama instead of suing him.

Democrats are trying to use this to their advantage.

Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told reporters today that his group raised $7.6 million since Republicans announced plans to sue Obama.

Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer gave the issue attention last week, telling reporters he “would not discount” the possibility of an impeachment attempt.

Boehner shot all that down today.

“This whole talk about impeachment is coming from the president’s own staff and coming from Democrats on Capitol Hill,” he said. “Why? Because they’re trying to rally their people to give money and to show up at this year’s election.”
