First Solar Applies for 370 Megawatt Project in Chile

July 21 (Bloomberg) -- First Solar Inc., the biggest U.S. photovoltaic panel maker, is seeking to build Latin America’s largest solar project in Chile.

The Parque Sol del Desierto in Northern Chile’s Antofagasta region will have a capacity of 370 megawatts, the Renewable Energy Center at Chile’s Energy Ministry said in a July 18 statement. Tempe, Arizona-based First Solar applied for environmental permits last month to build the $823 million power project.

The project will triple Chile’s installed solar capacity, according to the statement.

As of June, Chile’s renewable energy capacity stood at 1,710 megawatts, or 8.7 percent of total installed capacity, according to the energy center. Solar energy makes up 11 percent of the renewable power mix.

First Solar didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
