Overpass Collapse Kills Two in World Cup Semi-Final City

July 3 (Bloomberg) -- An overpass that is under construction collapsed and killed at least two people in Belo Horizonte, the Brazilian city scheduled to host the first semi-final match of the World Cup.

The overpass, which Construtora Cowan SA was building, is part of a rapid bus transit project being built with resources set aside for the month-long soccer tournament, the press office of the city’s works and infrastructure secretariat said by phone. It is less than 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the Mineirao soccer stadium where the semi-final game will be held July 8.

The company “deeply laments” the accident, and a technical team is working to determine its cause, it said in an emailed statement. The company said it is also adding structural support to a second overpass.

The city is responsible for the project received federal resources, according to a press officer at the federal government’s Cities Ministry. Cowan before today’s accident was scheduled to finish the overpass by the end of July, Belo Horizonte’s works secretariat press office said by phone.
