Almost 800,000 Vote in `Illegal' Hong Kong Democracy Poll

More than 780,000 votes, most of them electronic, have been cast in an unofficial poll in Hong Kong on how to choose the territory’s next leader.

By 5 p.m local time, 783,685 ballots were received in the 10-day poll, according to the website of organizer Occupy Central With Love and Peace, a protest group that plans to hold a sit-in in the city’s financial district if electoral reforms don’t meet its demands. The vote will end at 10 p.m. today.

The organizers said they aim to make the results of the vote available an hour after polls close. The vote ends ahead of July 1, which marks the anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese rule in 1997.

China, which reserves for itself the right to vet nominees for Hong Kong’s chief executive, has said the poll is illegal.
