Danube River Water Restoration Works to Get WWF, Coca-Cola Aid

June 20 (Bloomberg) -- The Danube, the European Union’s longest river, will receive aid from the WWF and Coca-Cola Co. for projects to help restore wetlands, floodplains and water quality for six countries along the famed waterway.

The nature conservancy and beverage maker today announced the partnership would work to improve the equivalent of at least 7,400 football fields of wetland habitat and 12 million cubic meters of water from Romania to Austria by 2020. Fish and wildlife would benefit from the works as would reconstructed wetlands that help conserve freshwater resources, the organizations said.

The partnership includes building a fish pass funded by a Coca-Cola grant, removing dykes to reconnect floodplains and boost flooding capacity and are part of efforts supported by local and EU authorities, the groups said.
