Djerba Island Water Desalination Contract Goes to FCC Unit, GS

The water management unit of Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA and GS Inima Environment SA won a contract to build a desalination plant on the Tunisian island resort of Djerba to expand in North Africa.

The 70 million-euro ($95 million) order from Tunisia’s national water agency was awarded to FCC Aqualia, Europe’s third-largest water company according to researcher Global Water Intelligence, and GS E&C’s Spanish subsidiary, the companies said in separate statements.

The group will design, build and operate the seawater desalination plant, which when done will produce about 50,000 cubic meters of drinking water a day, enough to supply 150,000 on Djerba. The German development bank KfW and AFD of France will co-finance the works, FCC Aqualia said today. The Barcelona-based builder said the water unit’s first contract in Tunisia expands its footprint from Algeria and Egypt.
