Tsarnaev Lawyers Seeking to Move Terror Trial From Boston

June 11 (Bloomberg) -- Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s lawyers told a judge they’re preparing to ask to move his trial to a different city, a common tactic in high-profile criminal cases to avoid being disadvantaged by negative publicity.

The lawyers said they need time for a “detailed expert analysis of the venue research and media surrounding this case” and told a judge in federal court in Boston today they want until at least Aug. 3 to submit their request.

Tsarnaev, who has pleaded not guilty, is scheduled to go to trial in November and might face a death sentence if convicted. Three people were killed and hundreds wounded in the April 2013 bombing in Boston, the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001.

The judge presiding over the case gave the government until June 13 to respond to the defense request to extend a deadline for preparing a change-of-venue request. Lawyers for Tsarnaev didn’t specify in their filing today which venue they would prefer.

The Tsarnaev case is U.S. v. Tsarnaev, 13-cr-10200, U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts (Boston).
