U.K. to Support NATO Allies in Baltic Military Exercises

The British Armed Forces will take part in three additional exercises in Poland and the Baltic states to help reassure NATO allies in eastern Europe of the U.K.’s commitment to the region.

The Royal Navy has deployed the frigate HMS Montrose to participate in the largest multinational maritime exercise this year in the Baltic Sea, the government said in a statement. The army has deployed more than 100 personnel for a U.S.-led live-fire exercise in Estonia and Latvia. A third exercise in Poland will see a group of 200 British infantry troops take part in a similar exercise in September.

“The U.K. continues to play a central role in providing reassurance to our allies in eastern Europe and the Baltic states,” Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said in a statement. “The situation in Ukraine continues to be of great concern to the international community and it is right that NATO members and partners publicly demonstrate our commitment.”

Petro Poroshenko was sworn in as the new president of Ukraine yesterday after six months of violent unrest that has caused the worst standoff between Russia and the U.S. and its allies since the Cold War.
