Romania’s Simona Halep won the second-set tiebreak with Maria Sharapova to force a third set of their French Open final.
Halep won the tiebreak 7-5. Sharapova, the 2012 champion, took the first set 6-4 against the fourth-ranked Halep in 57 minutes when Halep hit a forehand wide. It was the first set Halep has dropped in the tournament.
Russia’s Sharapova is going for her fifth major singles title after missing the last five months of 2013 with a right shoulder injury. In 2012, Sharapova won Roland Garros to become only the sixth woman since tennis turned professional in 1968 to complete the career Grand Slam of having won all four majors at least once.
Halep won the 2008 girl’s title in Paris, and is the first Romanian to reach a Grand Slam tennis final in 34 years, when her current manager, Virginia Ruzici, finished runnerup.
