Don Zimmer, Who Spent Six Decades in Major Leagues, Dies at 83

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Don Zimmer, who spent 10 seasons as a New York Yankees coach as part of a 60-year career in Major League Baseball, has died at 83, Major League Baseball said in an e-mailed release.

Zimmer spent 12 years as an infielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Mets and three other teams. He went on to manage four teams and work as a coach for five others. He recently had been working as a senior advsier with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Joe Torre, who as Yankees manager used Zimmer as a bench coach, is now an MLB executive vice president.

“I hired him as a coach, and he became like a family member to me,” Torre said in a statement released by MLB. “The game of baseball lost a special person tonight. He was a good man.”
