U.S. Sticking to Iran Nuclear Deadline as IAEA Resolution Looms

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Diplomats trying to resolve the decade-long conflict over Iran’s nuclear program should stick to their self-imposed deadline, the U.S. envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

“A good steady approach and an ambitious deadline are worth having,” Joseph Macmanus said today at a briefing in Vienna. “That’s what we’re focused on.”

World powers and Iran will convene another round of talks this month in Vienna. They’re trying to strike a long-term accord before July 20, when an interim deal offering Iran some sanctions relief in exchange for limits on its nuclear program expires.

IAEA envoys met in the Austrian capital to discuss Iranian cooperation with international monitors two days after the organization’s director general, Yukiya Amano, signaled that allegations about past nuclear-weapons experiments in Iran may take longer to resolve. The country, with the world’s No. 4 proven oil reserves, has given inspectors more access to and information about nuclear facilities and dual-use applications.

“Those are good steps but this is a long stairway to climb,” Macmanus said. “Optimism and pessimism aren’t going to advance this, real information sharing will.”
