BT Group Agrees to Buy Welsh Wind Power Under $167 Million Deal

BT Group Plc, the U.K. phone company, agreed to buy all the electricity from a 22.5-megawatt Welsh wind farm under a deal valued at about 100 million pounds ($167 million) over 15 years.

BT plans to purchase enough clean energy from Pennant Walters Ltd.’s wind farm to match the consumption of about half of its operations in Wales, the London-based company said today in a statement on its website. The wind farm, now under construction, will comprise nine turbines in South Wales and is expected to start operating in the middle of next year.

“As well as providing BT with long-term price certainty, this deal underpins the creation of a new wind farm for South Wales, and that supports long-term jobs and benefits for the local economy,” said Ann Beynon, a BT Wales director. “We reduced carbon emissions from our own operations by 25.5 percent globally during 2013 to 2014.”

BT in May last year said it’s starting to source 100 percent of its electricity in the U.K. from renewable energy after signing an agreement with RWE Npower Plc.
